運命の転機が訪れたのは、ある冬の日のことである。ザーマイン軍の一個旅団がベルクス連邦軍の巧妙な奇襲を受け、壊滅的な打撃を被った。
生き残った兵士たちが血路を開いて撤退する中、上官の貴族がルフに命じたのは殿の役目だった。
殿とは、撤退する味方を守るため最後まで戦場に残り、追撃してくる敵軍を食い止める役目である。ほぼ確実に死を意味する任務だった。
ルフはその命令を聞き、死ぬ覚悟で殿を務めた。
死の淵を彷徨う極限状態の戦いの中で、ルフは己の限界を遥かに超えた。そして、ついに気力という超越的な力に目覚めたのである。驚くべきことに、ルフは気力を使わない状態でも軍で一番の強さを誇っていたのだ。
気力に目覚めたルフは、まさに神話の英雄のように戦った。押し寄せる敵の千の軍勢を、たった一人で完全に壊滅させたのである。
それ以降、国内外でルフは剣聖と呼ばれるようになった。
だが、栄光の五年後。なんとルフは反逆罪という重罪で処刑が決定されてしまったのだ。
その罪状は、次期皇帝であるルシウス皇子を殺害しようと企てたというものである。しかしルフ本人によれば、これはルシウスによる巧妙な陥れだったという。
死ぬつもりなど毛頭なかったルフは、厳重警備の牢獄を脱走し、執拗な追手を撒くために険しい山脈を越えて、この国にたどり着いたのだった。
会議の出席者全員が資料を読み終えたことを確認すると、白髭の宰相が重々しい口調で全員の顔を見渡しながら言った。
「まだザーマイン帝国で剣聖がどのような扱いを受けているかの最新情報は入っておらん。しかし、実は最近になって帝国が新しくシドという名の剣士を、帝国軍の剣術指南役に任命したという情報が入っている」
その言葉に、宮廷魔法士の一人であるアランが、初耳だという表情を浮かべた。アランは若くして頭角を現した天才魔法士で、情報収集にも長けている。そんな彼が知らない情報というのは珍しかった。
「シドですか……聞いたことがない名前ですね。確か元々、軍の剣術指南役は剣聖ルフが任命されていましたよね？」
「その通りじゃ。どうやらこの資料に書かれている内容は、真実である可能性が極めて高い」
宰相の言葉に一同は納得の表情を浮かべた。と同時に、アルスを見つめる疑惑の眼差しは次第に薄れていった。情報の信憑性が確認されたことで、王の判断への理解が深まったのである。
アルスは自分に向けられていた疑いの目がほぼなくなりつつあることを感じ、胸の奥で安堵の息をついた。しかし、王として威厳を保つため、表情は毅然としたままだった。
「我が剣聖ルフと直接話をした印象では、我が国に仕えたいという意思に嘘は感じられなかった。我が言うのだから、これは間違いない」
王は舐められたらおしまいだ——それは先代の王である父親から幾度となく聞かされていた言葉である。アルスは威厳を感じさせるため、少し見栄を張って断言した。
「なるほど。確かにこれまでアルス王は人選を間違えたことはありませんからね」
アルスと個人的にも親しい宮廷魔法士のアランが、タイミング良く援護の言葉を口にする。
「王が言うのならそうなんだろう」
「確かに、王の判断はこれまで大きな間違いがなかった」
「我々が心配するまでもないか」
口々に王への信頼を示す言葉が飛び交う。その様子を見ていたアルスは、流石に恥ずかしくなってきた。
「オッホン！」
大げさに咳払いをして、一度場を静かにする。
「実は問題は他にもある」
アルスの表情が急に真剣になった。
「それは剣聖ルフが何らかの理由で暴れ出した場合、果たして誰がそれを止められるか、ということだ」
この言葉に、会議室の空気が再び緊張したものへと変わった。アルスはもう一つの重大な懸念事項を切り出したのである。
カーマ王国はここ百年間、大きな戦争に巻き込まれることがなかった。それは平和な時代の象徴でもあったが、同時に戦闘で名を馳せた英雄と呼ばれる存在がいないことを意味していた。
むしろ平和故に優れた学者が数多く輩出され、魔法士の数も豊富である。
しかし、真の英雄は戦場でこそ生まれるものだ。我が国の魔法士たちが実戦においてどれほどの力を発揮できるのか、アルスには確信が持てなかった。
「それはごもっともなご意見ですな」
宰相が深くうなずきながら答える。
「仮にルフが暴走して国の上層部が全員殺されるようなことになれば、この大陸において我が国は生涯笑い者にされ続けるでしょうからな」
平和を何より望み、変わることなくこのカーマ王国を存続させていこうと考えているアルスにとって、それは絶対に我慢のならないことだった。
「アラン」
アルスは信頼する魔法士に視線を向けた。
「お前から見て、剣聖ルフに勝てそうか？ 正直な意見を聞かせてくれ」
宮廷魔法士アランという男は、カーマ王国が誇る名門ルーベル魔法大学において歴代トップクラスの成績を残して卒業した、まさに天才と呼ぶにふさわしい人物である。
彼の論文「マナが脳に与える影響とその可能性」は、大陸各地の著名な魔法学者たちから極めて高い評価を受けた。
その功績により、僅か二十二歳という若さでカーマ王国の魔法士に与えられる最高の栄誉とされるベルガ賞を授与されているほどである。
カーマ王国において数少ない、英雄レベルに達していると思われる人物。そしてアルスが考える限り、最も戦闘能力が高そうな男でもあった。
「そうですね……」
アランは少し考え込むような仕草を見せてから答えた。
「私の本職は戦闘ではなく、どちらかというと研究の方ですから。正面から戦った場合、恐らく負けるでしょう。戦闘に関して言えば、私よりもベルルの方が遥かに強いですよ」
その言葉を聞いたアルスは、アランの隣に座っている紫色の美しい髪をした少女に目を向けた。
宮廷魔法士ベルル。彼女もまた、アランほどではないが最近になって話題となった天才魔法士である。ルーベル魔法大学を二年も飛び級して卒業した才女で、在学中は戦闘魔法科に所属していた。
アルスの視線を受けて、ベルルは落ち着いた声で答える。
「私が何百回か戦闘シミュレーションを行ったところ、負けはしないと感じました。ただし勝てるかと言われれば、決定打に欠けるというのが正直なところです。しかし、城に集っている宮廷魔法士と騎士たちが力を合わせれば、確実に勝てると断言できます」
「なるほど。それなら問題はないじゃろう」
宰相が安堵の表情を浮かべながら言った。
「とりあえずアルス王の護衛には、ベルルをつければよい」
その提案に、反対の声は上がらなかった。
しかしアルスからすれば、この真面目そうな少女に四六時中護衛されるのは、王としての威厳が薄れて舐められそうだなと内心で感じてしまう。だが命あっての物種だ。死にたくはなかったので、諦めて受け入れることにした。
その後の会議では、密偵をザーマイン帝国に派遣することや、国境警備の強化など、隣国への警戒を強める方針が次々と決定されていった。
夜が更けるまで続いた長い会議を終えて自室に戻ったアルスは、窓から見える星空を見上げながら深い溜息をついた。
「平穏な日々は、もう戻ってこないのかもしれないな」
そんな予感が、胸の奥深くでひそかに芽生えていた。
Sword Saint Lugh—that is the name of the most famous Zarmainian in the Karma Kingdom.
His name echoed throughout the continent during the great war between the Zarmain Empire and the Berx Federation that broke out five years ago. It was that very war where bloody, fierce battles unfolded in various places, giving birth to many heroes and tragedies.
Lugh, who was twenty-seven years old at the time, was known within the Zarmain army as a quite famous master of the sword. There was practically no one in the army who could defeat Lugh in swordsmanship, and his overwhelming strength incurred the jealousy of the nobles who were his superiors, to the point where he received daily harassment.
The turning point of his fate arrived on a certain winter day. A brigade of the Zarmain army suffered a clever surprise attack from the Berx Federation army and took a devastating blow.
While the surviving soldiers opened a path of blood and retreated, the role that the noble superior ordered Lugh to take was that of the rearguard.
The rearguard is the role of remaining on the battlefield until the very end to protect the retreating allies and holding back the pursuing enemy forces. It was a mission that almost certainly meant death.
Upon hearing that order, Lugh acted as the rearguard with the resolve to die.
In the extreme state of battle, wandering the abyss of death, Lugh far exceeded his own limits. And then, he finally awakened to a transcendental power called "Spirit." Surprisingly, Lugh had boasted the greatest strength in the army even in a state where he could not use Spirit.
Awakened to Spirit, Lugh fought truly like a hero of myth. He completely annihilated an overwhelming enemy force of a thousand soldiers all by himself.
From that point on, both domestically and internationally, Lugh came to be called the Sword Saint.
However, five years after his glory. Shockingly, it was decided that Lugh would be executed for the grave crime of treason.
The charge was that he had plotted to assassinate Prince Lucius, the next emperor. However, according to Lugh himself, this was a clever frame-up by Lucius.
Lugh, who had absolutely no intention of dying, escaped from the heavily guarded prison and, to shake off his persistent pursuers, crossed steep mountain ranges and arrived in this country.
After confirming that all the attendees of the meeting had finished reading the documents, the white-bearded prime minister spoke with a heavy tone while looking at everyone's faces.
"We have not yet received the latest information on how the Sword Saint is being treated in the Zarmain Empire. However, we have actually received information that recently the Empire has appointed a new swordsman named Cid as the sword instructor of the Imperial Army."
At those words, Alan, one of the court mages, showed an expression indicating he was hearing this for the first time. Alan is a genius mage who distinguished himself at a young age and is also skilled at gathering information. It was rare for him not to know a piece of information.
"Cid, is it...? That's a name I haven't heard. If I recall correctly, wasn't Sword Saint Lugh originally appointed as the military's sword instructor?"
"Exactly. It seems highly likely that the contents written in this document are true."
At the prime minister's words, everyone showed an expression of understanding. At the same time, the suspicious gazes directed at Ars gradually faded. The confirmation of the information's credibility deepened their understanding of the king's judgment.

"I see. Indeed, King Ars has never made a mistake in choosing personnel up until now, after all."
Alan, the court mage who was also personally close to Ars, spoke words of support with perfect timing.
"If the king says so, then it must be true."
"Certainly, there have been no major mistakes in the king's judgments so far."
"I suppose there's no need for us to worry."

With these words, the atmosphere in the conference room changed back into a tense one. Ars had brought up another grave concern.
The Karma Kingdom had not been involved in a major war for the past hundred years. While that was a symbol of a peaceful era, it simultaneously meant that there were no beings called heroes who had made a name for themselves in battle.
Rather, precisely because of the peace, many excellent scholars had been produced, and the number of mages was abundant.
However, true heroes are born only on the battlefield. Ars could not be certain just how much power the mages of his country could exert in actual combat.
"That is a very valid point."
The prime minister answered with a deep nod.
"Hypothetically, if Lugh were to go out of control and all the upper echelons of the country were to be killed, our country would continue to be a laughingstock on this continent for the rest of its existence, after all."
For Ars, who desired peace above all else and wished for the Karma Kingdom to continue unchanging, that was something he absolutely could not tolerate.
"Alan."
Ars directed his gaze to the mage he trusted.
"From your perspective, do you think you could win against Sword Saint Lugh? Let me hear your honest opinion."
The man named Alan, a court mage, is a person truly deserving of being called a genius, having graduated with some of the highest grades in history from the prestigious Rubel Magic University, which the Karma Kingdom takes pride in.
His paper, "The Influence of Mana on the Brain and Its Possibilities," received extremely high praise from prominent magic scholars across the continent.
Thanks to those achievements, he was even awarded the Berga Prize, considered the highest honor bestowed upon mages in the Karma Kingdom, at the young age of twenty-two.
He was one of the few individuals in the Karma Kingdom thought to have reached the level of a hero. And as far as Ars could think of, he was also the man who seemed to have the highest combat ability.
"Let me see..."
Alan showed a gesture of thinking for a moment before answering.
"My main profession is not combat, but rather research, if anything. If I were to fight him head-on, I would probably lose. When it comes to combat, Berl is far stronger than I am."
Upon hearing those words, Ars turned his eyes to the girl with beautiful purple hair sitting next to Alan.

"When I ran combat simulations several hundred times, I felt that I wouldn't lose. However, if asked whether I could win, honestly speaking, I lack a decisive blow. But, if the court mages and knights gathered in the castle combine their strength, I can assert that we would definitely win."
"I see. In that case, there shouldn't be a problem."
The prime minister said with an expression of relief.
"For the time being, we should assign Berl as King Ars's bodyguard."
No voices of opposition arose against that proposal.
However, from Ars's perspective, he inwardly felt that being guarded round-the-clock by this serious-looking girl would dilute his dignity as a king and make people look down on him. But life comes first. Since he didn't want to die, he decided to give up and accept it.
In the meeting that followed, policies to strengthen vigilance against the neighboring country were decided one after another, such as dispatching spies to the Zarmain Empire and reinforcing border security.
Returning to his own room after finishing the long meeting that lasted late into the night, Ars let out a deep sigh while looking up at the starry sky visible from the window.
"Peaceful days... might never return, huh."
Such a premonition was secretly sprouting deep within his chest.
