Chapter 4: A Shadowy Incident
§00 概要
この第4話では、ルシウスと黒ローブの男が密談を交わし、逃亡したルフの行方について議論します。ルフが南の山脈方面、カーマ王国に向かったと推測したルシウスは、これをカーマ王国への戦争の大義名分として利用し、ベルクス連邦との二面作戦を強いる戦略を思いつきます。一方、ベルクス連邦では若き魔法士レバニアが、マナを用いて生物が死んでも動き続けるという禁忌の実験に成功し、画期的な論文を完成させます。しかし、彼を好待遇で迎えた恩師ファルス教授の目的は、その研究成果を奪うことでした。夜中に突然襲撃されたレバニアは、研究室の隠し通路から逃走しますが、最終的に追い詰められてしまいます。絶望の中、彼は自らの命を絶つと同時に、誰にも知られていない未知の魔法を行使します。強烈な光の後、ファルス教授が見たものは、レバニアの頭蓋骨だけでした。本稿では、緊迫した会話や情景描写、絶望と覚悟をどのように英語で表現するかに焦点を当てます。
月明かりすら届かない暗く湿った地下室で、二人の男が密談を交わしていた。
一人は肩まで伸ばした銀髪が美しく、整った顔立ちをしている青年だった。しかし今、その端正な顔は怒りによって醜く歪んでいる。彼は豪奢な椅子に深く腰かけ、目の前に跪く男を睨みつけていた。
もう一人の男は全身を黒いローブで包み、フードを深く被って素顔を隠している。いかにも怪しげな風体で、銀髪の青年の前に膝をついて平伏していた。
「ルシウス様、報告いたします」
黒ローブの男が恐る恐る口を開いた。
「ルフの行方についてですが……どうやら南の山脈方面に向かったようで、そこから先の足取りが完全に途絶えております」
その報告を聞いた瞬間、ルシウスと呼ばれた銀髪の青年の顔が、さらに大きく歪んだ。怒りで血管が浮き出た額を震わせながら、目の前の男に向かって怒声を浴びせかける。
「何だと！？ つまり逃がしたということか！ あいつは何日も満足に食事を摂っていなかったんだぞ！」
ルシウスの逆鱗に触れてしまった黒ローブの男は、自分の責任を少しでも軽くしようと、予め用意していた言い訳を必死に述べる。
「し、しかしルフの動きは普段とほぼ変わりませんでした。恐らく何者かが密かに牢屋に食事を運んでいた可能性があります」
「何だと？ 一体どこの誰が……」
反射的に怒りの声を上げようとしたルシウスだったが、途中で言葉を止めた。ルフに食事を与えそうな人物の顔が、頭の中に浮かんだからである。
「まさか……いや、まさかそんな……」
それは、ルシウスが剣聖ルフに無実の罪をでっち上げて処刑に追い込もうとした、その発端となった人間だった。
「どこまで俺を馬鹿にしやがる……ルフめが！」
ルシウスはしばらくの間、怒りに全身を震わせ続けた。
やがて怒りが収まってくると、ルシウスは冷静にルフの現在の居場所について考えを巡らせ始める。
南の山脈を越えた先にあるのは、カーマ王国だ。ザーマイン帝国とはあまり交流のない小国である。同時に、戦争を仕掛ける明確な理由もない国だった。
そこまで考えを進めたとき、ルシウスの頭に一つの妙案が閃いた。
ルフは国家反逆罪に問われている重大犯罪者である。つまり、もしカーマ王国がそのルフを雇ったりすれば、それは我が国への明確な挑発行為とみなすことができる。戦争の大義名分として十分に使えるのだ。
ルシウスの口元に、邪悪な笑みが浮かんだ。ルフが逃げたことには腹が立ったが、今はむしろその行動を褒めてやりたい気分だった。
ここ最近、ベルクス連邦との戦争にも飽きが来ていた頃だ。カーマ王国を属国にしてしまえば、ベルクス連邦は二つの戦線を同時に抱えることになる。戦略的に見ても理想的な展開だった。
問題は、あの険しい山脈をどうやって軍を率いて越えるかということだが、優れた力を持った英雄がザーマイン帝国には複数存在している。ルシウスには、それを実現可能な英雄に心当たりがあった。
「よし、そうと決まれば行動は早い方がいい」
ルシウスはまず、ベルクス連邦との休戦交渉を開始する準備に取りかかった。

その頃、ベルクス連邦のとある研究施設で、一人の若い魔法士が歓喜の声を上げていた。
「やった！ ついにやったぞ！ これで俺も歴史に名を残す伝説の魔法士だ！」
男の名前はレバニア。数年前にカーマ王国の名門ルーベル魔法大学を卒業した、野心に満ちた魔法士である。
レバニアが興奮して見つめる先には、信じがたい光景があった。本来なら死んでいるはずの白骨化したマウスが、ケージの中で元気に動き回っているのだ。
「アランが言っていたことは正しかった。そして俺の予測も的中した」
レバニアは感動で震える手で、急いで研究結果を論文にまとめ始める。ペンを走らせる音だけが静まり返った研究室に響く。数時間後、ついに画期的な論文が完成した。
完成した論文を、乱雑に書類が山積みになっている机の上に放り投げると、レバニアはその場に崩れ落ちるように倒れ込み、深い眠りについた。三日三晩の徹夜による疲労が、ついに限界に達したのである。
数時間後、何か胸騒ぎを感じたレバニアは深夜に目を覚ました。
「まさかこんな時間に起きてしまうなんて……何だか嫌な予感がする」
三日間徹夜していたレバニアとしては、丸一日は眠り続けるつもりだったのだ。
危機察知の能力に自信があるレバニアは、ゆっくりと研究室のドアに向かって歩き始めた。静寂に包まれた廊下からは、不気味な気配が漂ってくる。
バタン！
突然ドアが勢いよく開かれ、一人の老人が顔を出した。 レバニアは驚いて肩をビクッと震わせ、思わず悲鳴を上げそうになったが、寸前のところで相手が誰なのかに気づく。
「ファルス教授じゃないですか。こんな夜中に驚かさないでくださいよ」
突然現れた人物が知り合いだと分かったレバニアは、ひとまず安堵した。
ファルス教授は、レバニアが魔法大学を卒業して故郷のベルクス連邦に帰ってきた際に、破格の好待遇で助手として迎え入れてくれた恩人である。
しかし、なぜこんな深夜に研究室を訪れたのだろうか。レバニアは不思議に思った。
「危機察知が鋭いというのは本当だったのだな」
ファルス教授が妙に冷たい声で呟く。
「まあ、今更気づいたところで何も変わらないが」
「え？ それはどういう……」
「もう、遅い」
ファルスがそう呟くと同時に、片手に魔力を集中させて鋭く収束させ、レバニアの胸に向けて突き刺した。
ズブッ！
しかし魔力の刃が貫いたのは、レバニアの胸ではなく肩だった。魔力の流れを敏感に感じ取ったレバニアが、無意識に体を動かして致命傷を避けたのである。
「ほう、やるな。だがお前の逃げ場はもうないぞ」
「くそっ！ あなたがこんな人だったなんて……」
レバニアは瞬時に背を向けて、研究室の奥にある本棚に向かって走り出した。
頭の回転が速いレバニアは、この状況の真相を理解し始めていた。才能はあるが人脈のない平民の魔法士を好待遇で迎え入れ、優れた研究成果を出させてから殺して奪う。栄誉だけを求める腐敗した魔法士がやりそうな卑劣な手口だった。
レバニアは本棚に辿り着くと、上から四番目、左から二番目の本を押し込んだ。その後、本棚の端を両手で掴んで手前に向けて力を入れる。すると本棚は滑らかに回転し、地下へと続く隠し階段が姿を現した。
レバニアは急いで階段を駆け下りていく。
それを見ていたファルスは、驚きの声を上げた。
「何だと！？ そのような隠し通路をいつの間に作ったのだ！？」
ファルスは少し慌てながら、緊急事態に備えて雇っていた野良の魔法士たちに魔法で連絡を取る。
「対象を取り逃がした。私はそのまま追跡する。お前たちは町から出られないよう見張っておけ」
その後、ファルスはレバニアが逃げて行った道を追い始めた。
レバニアは何とか追手たちの網をかいくぐり、町の外まで逃げ延びていた。そして向かう先は、親友のアランがいるカーマ王国である。
走りながら、震える手でアランへの手紙を書く。命からがら逃げている最中だというのに、几帳面な性格のレバニアは重要な情報をしっかりと書き記した。
手紙を書き上げると、それに向かって特殊な呪文を唱える。すると手紙に小さな翼が生え、夜空に向かって飛び立って行った。
「と、とりあえず何とか撒けたか……」
レバニアは走り続けたことで限界に達していた。近くにあった大きな樹を背にして座り込む。
「誰が撒けたって？」
すぐ後ろの木の向こうから声がして、レバニアは驚いて飛び上がった。振り返ると、ファルス教授が木の傍らに悠然と立っている。
「やだなあ～、ファルス教授って人を驚かすのがそんなに好きなんですか？」
流石に限界だったが、この男に弱音を見せたくなかったレバニアは、必死に余裕があるように装った。
「もう限界なのは、レバニア、お前自身が一番よく分かっているはずだ」
ファルスが冷酷な視線を向ける先には、肩から血を流し、今にも倒れそうになっている若い魔法士がいた。
「安心しろ。お前の研究成果は私が有効活用してやる」
ファルスの口元に、残酷な笑みが浮かんだ。
「殺されたくはないだろう？ ならば自害しろ」
その言葉を聞くと、レバニアの顔に不敵な笑みが浮かんだ。
「言ったな？ ではお望み通り、自害してやろう！」
レバニアはそう吐き捨てると、これまで誰も聞いたことがないような複雑で長大な呪文を唱え始めた。これから行おうとしている魔法は完全にぶっつけ本番だ。成功する確率は五分五分といったところだろう。
だがもう後がないレバニアは、死を覚悟した禁忌の魔法行使に踏み切った。 その呪文は、長年教授をしているファルスですら聞いたことがない未知の呪文だった。
「何の呪文だ、それは！？」
危険を察知したファルスは、レバニアに向けて攻撃魔法を放とうとする。
「もう遅い」
レバニアが一言呟くと、彼の頭部が眩いばかりに光り始めた。その光は辺り一面を真昼のように照らし出し、ファルスの視界を完全に奪った。
ファルスは片手で目を覆いながら、もう片方の手で無差別にレバニアの方向へ魔法を撃ち続けた。
やがて光が収まると、ファルスは覆っていた手を下ろしてレバニアがいた場所を確認する。
そこには信じられないものがあった。人間の頭蓋骨が一つ、ポツンと地面に転がっているのだ。
「一体何が起こったのだ」
ファルスはしばらく混乱しながら、残された頭蓋骨を見つめ続けた。やがて、ある考えが頭に浮かぶ。
「奴の研究は確か、マナを用いて生物が死んでも動き続けることを目指していたはず...そうか、そういうことか！」
ファルスは納得したばかりに思わず笑ってしまう。
「己自身を死んでも動くように己に魔法をかけたのか...はははっ これは傑作だ。失敗するなんてな」
ファルスはもう用は済んだとばかりに、頭蓋骨を蹴り飛ばすとその場を去った。
In a dark, damp basement where not even moonlight could reach, two men were exchanging a secret talk.
One was a young man with beautiful silver hair that stretched to his shoulders and well-ordered facial features. But now, that handsome face was distorted hideously by anger. He sat deeply in a luxurious chair, glaring at the man kneeling before him.
The other man wrapped his entire body in a black robe, wearing a hood deeply to hide his true face. With a truly suspicious appearance, he prostrated himself on his knees before the silver-haired young man.
"Lord Lucius, I have a report to make."
The black-robed man opened his mouth timidly.
"Regarding Ruf's whereabouts... it seems he headed towards the southern mountain range, and his tracks have completely disappeared beyond that point."
The moment he heard that report, the face of the silver-haired young man called Lucius became even more distorted. Making the veins pop out on his forehead out of anger, he hurled a furious roar at the man before him.
"What!? Are you saying you let him escape!? He hadn't eaten properly for days!"
The black-robed man, having touched Lucius's reverse scale, desperately stated his prepared excuses in an attempt to lighten his responsibility even a little.
"H-however, Ruf's movements were almost no different from usual. There is a possibility that someone was secretly bringing food to his cell."
"What did you say? Just who in the world..."
Lucius reflexively tried to raise a voice of anger, but stopped his words mid-sentence. That was because the face of a person who seemed likely to give food to Ruf floated in his head.
"It can't be... no, surely it can't be..."
That was the very person who had become the origin of Lucius fabricating false charges against the Sword Saint Ruf and driving him to execution.
"Just how far do they intend to make a fool of me... damn that Ruf!"
For a while, Lucius continued to tremble his entire body with anger.
Eventually, as his anger subsided, Lucius calmly began to ponder about Ruf's current whereabouts.
Beyond the southern mountain range lies the Karma Kingdom. It is a small country that has little interaction with the Zarmine Empire. At the same time, it was a country without any clear reason to wage war against.
When he advanced his thoughts that far, an excellent idea flashed in Lucius's head.
Ruf is a major criminal accused of treason. In other words, if the Karma Kingdom were to hire that Ruf, it could be considered a clear act of provocation against our country. It can sufficiently be used as a just cause for war.
An evil smile floated to Lucius's mouth. He was angry that Ruf had escaped, but now he rather felt like praising that action.
Recently, he had been getting bored with the war against the Berx Federation. If they were to make the Karma Kingdom a vassal state, the Berx Federation would have to hold two fronts simultaneously. From a strategic point of view as well, it was an ideal development.
The problem was how to lead an army and cross that steep mountain range, but multiple heroes with excellent power existed in the Zarmine Empire. Lucius had an idea of a hero who could make that a reality.
"Alright, if that's decided, the sooner I act, the better."
Lucius first set about preparing to start armistice negotiations with the Berx Federation.

The man's name was Lebania. He was an ambitious magician who had graduated from the prestigious Rubel University of Magic in the Karma Kingdom a few years ago.
Beyond Lebania's excited gaze was an unbelievable sight. A skeletal mouse that should originally be dead was moving around energetically inside a cage.
"What Alan said was right. And my prediction hit the mark too."
With hands trembling from emotion, Lebania hurriedly began to compile the research results into a thesis. Only the sound of his pen running echoed in the silent laboratory. A few hours later, an epoch-making thesis was finally completed.
Throwing the completed thesis onto a desk where documents were piled up in disorder, Lebania collapsed on the spot and fell into a deep sleep. The fatigue from three consecutive all-nighters had finally reached its limit.
A few hours later, feeling some kind of premonition, Lebania woke up in the middle of the night.
"To think I'd wake up at such an hour... I have a somewhat bad feeling about this."
For Lebania, who had stayed up all night for three days, he had intended to continue sleeping for a whole day.
Lebania, who had confidence in his danger perception ability, slowly started walking toward the door of the laboratory. An eerie presence drifted from the corridor enveloped in silence.

Suddenly the door was opened forcefully, and an old man showed his face. Lebania trembled his shoulders with a start in surprise, and reflexively almost raised a scream, but just on the verge of it, he realized who the other person was.
"Professor Fals, isn't it? Please don't surprise me in the middle of the night like this."
Understanding that the suddenly appeared person was an acquaintance, Lebania felt relieved for the time being.
Professor Fals was a benefactor who had welcomed Lebania as an assistant with an exceptionally favorable treatment when he returned to his hometown in the Berx Federation after graduating from the university of magic.
However, why had he visited the laboratory this late at night? Lebania thought it was strange.
"So it was true that your danger perception is sharp."
Professor Fals muttered in a strangely cold voice.
"Well, nothing will change even if you realize it now."
"Eh? What does that mean..."
"It's already too late."
At the same time Fals muttered that, he concentrated magic power in one hand, sharply converged it, and thrust it toward Lebania's chest.

It was exactly the kind of despicable trick a corrupt magician who sought only honor would do.
Reaching the bookshelf, Lebania pushed in the second book from the left on the fourth shelf from the top. After that, he grabbed the edge of the bookshelf with both hands and applied force toward himself. Then the bookshelf smoothly rotated, and a hidden staircase leading underground revealed itself.
Lebania hurriedly rushed down the stairs.
Seeing that, Fals raised a voice of surprise.
"What!? Since when did he create such a hidden passage!?"

While running, he wrote a letter to Alan with a trembling hand. Even though he was in the middle of fleeing for his life, the methodical Lebania firmly wrote down the important information.
Finishing the letter, he chanted a special spell toward it. Then small wings sprouted on the letter, and it took off toward the night sky.
"A-anyway, did I somehow manage to shake them off...?"
Lebania had reached his limit from continuing to run. He sat down leaning his back against a large tree nearby.
"Who did you shake off?"
A voice came from beyond the tree right behind him, and Lebania jumped up in surprise. Looking back, Professor Fals was standing leisurely beside the tree.
"Oh man~, do you like surprising people that much, Professor Fals?"
He was truly at his limit, but Lebania, who didn't want to show weakness to this man, desperately pretended to have leeway.
"You yourself, Lebania, should know best that you are already at your limit."
Beyond Fals's cold gaze, there was a young magician bleeding from his shoulder and looking ready to collapse at any moment.
"Rest assured. I will put your research results to effective use."
A cruel smile floated to Fals's mouth.
"You don't want to be killed, do you? Then commit suicide."
