「……ルシウス様、カーマ王国への侵攻はいつ開始されるのですか？」
「もう準備は整っている。そうだな、作戦の要となる英雄たちをお前にも紹介しておこう」
ルシウスは近くに控えていた侍従を手招きすると、英雄のパーティーを呼ぶよう命じた。侍従は恭しく一礼すると、足音を立てずに部屋から出て行く。
しばらくすると、執務室の扉が再び開かれ、四人の人物が姿を現した。
ゲンブは彼らを一人ずつ注意深く観察した。これが噂に聞く英雄たちか……。
まず中央左に立つのは、金髪碧眼の美丈夫だった。傲岸不遜な雰囲気を漂わせ、腰には見事な装飾が施された剣を帯びている。間違いなく、『勇者ラドクリフ』だろう。
その左隣には、身長二メートルを超える巨漢が武道衣を纏って立っていた。露出した筋肉は鋼鉄のように発達しており、ただ立っているだけで圧倒的な威圧感を放っている。『武帝ガイア』、個人戦闘力において人類最強と謳われる男である。
勇者の右隣には、神官の装束に身を包んだ少女が目を閉じて佇んでいた。純白の髪と透き通るような肌を持つ彼女は、フェルシール神聖国の光魔法を操る一族の出身だったはずだ。
そして最後に、一番右に立つ男に視線を向けた時、ゲンブは眉をひそめた。他の三人とは明らかに格が違う、平凡で貧弱そうな男だったからである。噂で聞いている『英雄』の容姿とは、どれも一致しない。
その様子を察したルシウスが、知らないのも当然だとばかりに説明を始めた。
「ゲンブ、気になっているのは一番右の男だろう。あいつは言わばパーティーのサポート役だ」
ルシウスは一呼吸置いて続けた。
「魔物をテイムする珍しい魔法を持っていてな。テイムできるのは弱い魔物だけだが、荷物持ちには重宝する。それに、他人の身体能力を僅かに向上させる補助魔法も使える」
「なるほど、それは便利ですな」

「魔物は強大な存在を本能的に恐れる。人類最強と称されるガイアに、剣技と魔法を高いレベルで習得したラドクリフ、そして極めつけは魔物が最も恐れる光魔法の使い手ルシアの存在だ」
「なるほど……」
ゲンブはその説明に頷いたが、内心では疑問も感じていた。魔物は時として、どれほど強力な相手に対しても向かってくることがある。本能的な恐怖だけで完全に回避するというのは、少し説明が不十分な気がした。
