Episode 10: The Fake Official Duties and the King's Wavering Heart
In the royal castle of the Karma Kingdom, King Ars was spending his time confined to his own room as usual. However, there was a point that was clearly different from before.
The king, who normally would have been lying on his soft bed eating sweets and reading entertainment novels, was facing his profound wooden desk in his study today.
Several books that looked difficult were piled up on the desk, and a half-written notebook and an ink pen were neatly placed there.
This is a "set to make it look like he is working" that Ars painstakingly thought up. Since Ars has recently been accompanied by a guard, he decided that such a performance was necessary to maintain his dignity as a king.
Ars was half-in-doubt whether this performance could really deceive someone, but it was extremely effective on Berul, who was waiting as a guard.
"T-This is the king's office..."
Berul muttered with a trembling voice, overwhelmed with deep emotion. Tucking her purple hair behind her ear, she observes the state of the study down to every corner.
"To own so many books, as expected of King Ars."
The bookshelves lined up along the wall of the study indeed house a massive number of books. They are probably political books recording the affairs of neighboring countries, history books from ancient times, philosophical books, and specialized books on geography—a treasure trove of knowledge necessary for a king to administer state affairs.
When Berul softly peeked into the book opened on the desk, contents detailing the topography of the surrounding areas of this country caught her eye. Surely the king must be researching geographical features for territorial defense.
"The king usually takes a strong attitude, but to think he also does research like a scholar..."
Discovering that unexpected side, Berul felt a squeezing sensation in her chest. The intellectual and diligent side of a king who appears strong-willed and arrogant. She felt a gap there.
As Berul was gazing at Ars with a slightly entranced expression, the sound of a knock on the heavy door of the study echoed.
"Your Majesty, I have an urgent report."
The voice heard from beyond the door clearly contained agitation. While Ars inwardly thought it was a bother, he realized from the tone of that voice that an unusual situation had occurred.
"What is it?"
Ars looked up from the book and responded while trying to maintain his dignity.
"Yes. The truth is, Prime Minister Golem has suddenly collapsed."
"What!"
Ars was astonished by the report and vigorously stood up from his chair. The ink pen placed on the desk rolled off and made a dry sound on the stone floor.
Prime Minister Golem was a reliable presence who had single-handedly borne the practical duties of state affairs since Ars ascended the throne. If something were to happen to the prime minister, who on earth would govern this country?
"What is the cause? Report the detailed situation."
"Well, according to the diagnosis of the medical magician, it is heart disease associated with his lifespan."
The moment he heard the word heart disease, the blood drained from Ars's face and he turned pale. Heart disease—that was the same name as the illness that took his father's life.
The events of that day revived in his mind. The king his father, who had been vigorously administering state affairs until just yesterday, suddenly became unable to get up from bed one morning.
The medical magicians desperately administered treatment, but his father peacefully drew his last breath a few days later. And 17-year-old Ars came to inherit the throne while unprepared.
If he were to lose the prime minister as well, what on earth would become of this country? Ars issued an order with a trembling voice while being driven by fear and impatience.
"Guide me to the prime minister's side right now. Hurry."
"Understood."
Ars and Berul hurriedly left the study. While walking briskly down the stone corridor, only the worst-case scenarios floated in Ars's head.
When they arrived at the room where the prime minister was laid down, the somewhat haggard-looking Prime Minister Golem was indeed lying on the bed. Fortunately, he seemed to be conscious, and he faintly moved his head upon noticing Ars and the others entering the room.
Ars rushed to the prime minister's bedside and spoke to him with a worried look.
"Prime Minister, are you safe? How is your physical condition? Is there anywhere that hurts?"
Seeing Ars showering him with questions in rapid succession, the prime minister showed a gentle smile on his wrinkled face.
"Ho ho ho. I am still alright. Your Majesty need not worry so much either."
"I see... If that's the case, then it's fine, but."
Ars felt slightly relieved by the prime minister's words, but anxiety was still swirling in the depths of his heart. His father the king had also said he was alright at first. However, the very next day...
The sight of his father, who had been hale and hearty until just a few years ago, suddenly turning cold and lying there vividly revived in Ars's mind. The sense of despair and loneliness when he suddenly lost everything and came to ascend the throne at 17. Would he come to taste that experience once again?
"Your Majesty, a second detailed medical examination by the medical magician will be conducted now. Let us leave the room for the time being."
One of the civil officials proposed politely to Ars. Indeed, they could not afford to get in the doctor's way.
"That's right..."
Ars hesitated for a while as he remained standing at the prime minister's bedside. If he were to leave the room like this, and if something were to happen to the prime minister... Such anxiety would not leave his head.
Before long, Ars gazed at the prime minister as if he had made up his mind, and uttered words from the bottom of his heart.
"Prime Minister, do not die and leave me behind."
Rather than an order as a king, an earnest wish of a single young man was loaded into those words.
Hearing that, the prime minister showed a truly warm smile this time and nodded slightly. A silent message of "It's alright, do not worry" seemed to be loaded into that expression.
Ars, interpreting the prime minister's smile as a sign of consent, finally headed toward his own room with peace of mind. However, even as he walked down the corridor, his heart could not completely calm down.
Because the fear that he might lose indispensable human resources for this country weighed heavily on the king's heart.
